Ann-Katriin Kelder researches how subcultures shape spaces and vice versa

Ann-Katriin Kelder is an interior architect and alumna of the Estonian Academy of Arts. Her master’s thesis, “The Rent Included Three Hounds: The Alternative Clubs of Tallinn”, explores Tallinn’s contemporary club scene from a spatial perspective to explain why maintaining these environments is crucial for subcultures and city development. Her research, grounded in interviews with local club owners and scholars of nightlife and subcultures, reveals that the club as a space serves as an introspective manifestation of its participants’ ideal world – one that stands in opposition to mainstream culture and is thus inherently an original architectural creation.
