John Peel´s favorite Eastern European band

Röövel Ööbik burst onto the scene in 1984 as a bold noise-punk-avant-garde-experimental outfit, pushing the boundaries of sound and genre from the very start. Their creative trajectory took a turn in 1987 with the addition of vocalist Tõnu Pedaru, steering their sound toward indie-pop/rock while retaining an adventurous and eclectic experimental edge. A defining chapter in their story began when they sent a cassette tape across the sea to legendary English DJ John Peel.

The moment Peel spun their music on the BBC, a deep and lasting bond was forged, culminating in a trip to London in 1993 to record a John Peel session. Röövel Ööbik continued to break new ground with a string of critically acclaimed releases, including “Subterreanea”, Estonia’s first CD album and a pioneering shoegaze milestone in the indie music scene. After a decade-long hiatus, the band made a return in 2004, their creative spark undimmed. Their latest album, “Transcent”, released in 2024, showcases a sound as fresh as ever. Throughout their career, Röövel Ööbik has remained a cornerstone of the Estonian music scene, continually reinventing themselves while keeping their image and sound evergreen.
